PAXOS MAKES PERFECT: DISCOVER YOUR TRUE POTENTIAL ON THIS TINY GREEK ISLAND

16 July 2009 by Margaret Longes

Whether you are interested in writing, painting or photography, the tiny Greek island of Paxos provides the ideal location for discovering your true potential.

Paxos is a truly beautiful island, most of which is covered in olive and cypress trees, with just three main villages and a few hamlets, all remarkably beautiful but all very different. The island has hardly changed in 20 years: it has transport but still only five taxis and one bus, and it has tourists but fortunately the ones who want Paxos to remain Greek. What has changed is that it is now relatively easy to reach, as you no longer need the dedication required 20 years ago, when the only means of reaching the island from Corfu was by ferry that took three hours.

But what is it that makes Paxos so special for writers, painters and photographers? What is it that is so conducive to developing their creativity?

It’s the wonderful silence that is only interrupted by the occasional bird singing or the chip, chip, chipping of a stone-mason. It’s the fantastic clear light on the silver olive trees and the crystal clear water. It’s the perfume of jasmine, honeysuckle and the myriad of other wonderfully bright flowers that are to be found across the island from early spring to late autumn.

And it’s the relics of life in days gone by: the old donkey steps that are still in use and until the 20th  century formed the main communication network across the island; the old olive presses that were so important to the islanders for producing oil for lighting until they fell into disrepair with the arrival of electricity; the ancient wells and cisterns that provided the island’s water supply; and the many derelict stone houses that are so patiently awaiting restoration.

Paxos Life Activities is therefore now offering a range of holidays and courses to encourage anyone interested in writing, painting or photography to visit the island and tap into its peace and beauty in order to arouse their senses and enable them to develop their powers of creativity to the full.

The friendly and informal holidays, which are suitable for all levels of ability, are based around group tuition sessions on five mornings a week leaving plenty of time for individual advice, to explore Paxos or to simply relax. They offer the best of both worlds: the chance to have a holiday in an idyllic location, while at the same time doing something very worthwhile in an environment where there are few distractions.

Accommodation is provided in shared villas such as specialist tour operator Travel à la carte’s elegant Villa Eleonora, with its own pool and spacious terraces set in the shade and tranquillity of the olive groves high above Loggos, and The Manor House (also included in Travel à la carte’s Paxos programme), an imposing Venetian building and one of the most famous houses on the island, with stunning views over Loggos harbour and across to the mountains on the Greek mainland.

The holidays are not aimed at single travellers but anyone travelling alone who wishes to spend their time in the company of a group of like-minded people would be perfectly at home here. They are equally suited to couples and larger groups.

It is also possible for anyone who has their own accommodation or wishes to be more independent to join the group tuition sessions.

At the time of writing, places are still available on the following holidays in 2009: Painting (21 – 28 September) and Photography (28 September - 5 October).

Yoga holidays and Yacht Charter, with or without a skipper, are also available.
